After last weeks efforts, or lack of I was keen to see a response going into two very winnable games. The hard work and progress made against the Robins, Halesowen and the Eagles was thrown out of the window last week. I had hoped for two wins to finish the season, and hopefully to score a lot of goals in the process as we have been sadly lacking in that department of late.
Well it’s 1 down and 1 to go as we got the win and the goals. Even though the performance was a bit messy at times as not as convincing as I had hoped.
We were without Alex and Matt Barber so the reshuffling was always going to take a bit of time to settle. Paul Barber started on the right and offered a much-improved performance. Henner’s went back into midfield and Deano slotted in at right back. Dylan had to move across to the left and we stuck with Graham and Halloran upfront.
The game started slowly but we did look the better side. Mark Williams started to get a hold of the ball and we started to make things happen. We hadn’t really offered much in front of goal before Mike Halloran fired us in front after 10 minutes.
The Dragons never really threatened us in the 1st half but our continual offside and some poor finishing was stopping us from killing the game off. Paul Barber unluckily had a goal disallowed before Halloran brilliantly headed in (YES, THAT’S HEADED) in Mark’s corner. 2-0
We looked much better from corners in this match. I have said all season that mark takes the best corner in the league and we have not taken advantage of it enough. Scotty and Henner’s also came close with headers during the match.
The 3rd goal came when Graham was sent through before finishing with his left foot. Half time 3-0.
The 2nd half was much the same. The Dragons were trying to be more physical and wind us up. They got a goal back with a long looping shot after Henner’s had dwelled on the ball in our area. Halloran quickly raced clear to restore our 3-goal cushion. Yet again the Dragons hit back with the smallest player on the pitch somehow heading in a corner (Who’s man was it????).
Then we scored the goal of the game, if not one of our better goals of the season. Deano and Mark cleared the danger in our own right back position. Paul Barber burst up the right wing and crossed brilliantly for Halloran to head home his 4th goal of the game.
Mike then got his 5th goal, once again latching onto a Williams through ball before neatly slotting past the Dragons keeper.
So 6-2 and a comfortable win. We had chances to win by more but all in all it was job done. I was pleased to see us score two headers but obviously disappointed to again concede from a corner.
I was delighted to see Mike Halloran live up to his undoubted potential. He has now shown everybody else what I knew he could do. Now we need to see it more often.
Jim, Mark and Paul all had good games.
1 game to go and 1 more win would just put a touch of respectability to our season. I am looking for goals goals goals in the last match. Even if we concede a few along the way. Lets get forward and have a go at them.
